I was first on your cover in 1986, when my book Crackpot
came out. That was difficult time in my life, because at that point
I hadn't made a film for six years. I made Polyester in 1980, and I
didn't make Hairspray until '88. So it was a really long period,
during which I became a journalist, working for magazines like
Rolling Stone, Vogue, American Film, National Lampoon and Vanity
Fair. That writing was where Crackpot came from. In a weird way,
Crackpot really led to Hairspray. I'd originally written one of the
articles in Crackpot for Baltimore magazine. It was about The Buddy
Dean Show, which was what Hairspray was based on. Polyester was
successful and had been the first movie as well as being the first
movie I made that was R-rated. But it was a big leap to Hairspray,
which was my first SAG [Screen Actors Guild] movie as well as being
the first movie that I didn't really shoot myself. Yes, it was
certainly a turning point. But I'll tell you one thing: Paper was
always there for us from the very beginning.

I was on your cover again in 1994 when I did Serial Mom. I'd
been collecting art since the `60s, but then I began to make my own
art for a long time without telling anybody. I had a whole body of
work, and it was because of the late Colin Deland [of American Fine
Arts gallery] that I began to show. That was around '92 or '93. Did
you see my work on the cover of Artforum [Summer 2004]?

This year there's a lot going on. My new film A Dirty Shame
opens in September, and Cry Baby's going to become a Broadway
musical. I even have a soundtrack for A Dirty Shame coming out. I've
got a record deal with New Line Records. I'll also have a Christmas
album coming out called A John Waters Christmas. It's 15 of the most
insane, obscure Christmas carols that you've never heard. Then I
have a new one coming out next Valentine's Day called A Date with
John Waters, which is my idea of romantic music. Can you imagine a
John Waters record label? I was going to call it "Rimmer Records"
and have the [logo] be an asshole, but we're not doing that.
